Protein Shakes Benefits and Drawbacks

There are many benefits to drinking protein shakes, from simple convenience and portability to low calorie easily digestible nutrients, the benefits of drinking protein shakes are rather obvious. There are quite a few choices that you can make when selecting a protein shake so we will include a few of the drawbacks of taking protein shakes on a regular basis.

Firstly, we should stress that over the last 30 years' protein shakes have traveled a long road in the bodybuilding world. Whey protein is now a market leader in the protein shake business for good reason. You can get 20 grams of good quality, easily digested protein in just one scoop of whey powder.

You can be very specific about the quality of the protein that you take in by using a specific gauge to measure the protein quality of the food you eat called Biological Value (BV). This measures the amount of nitrogen, which is the amount of body protein measured in grams, that is replaceable with 100 grams' protein.

Before deciding on which is the best type of protein shake that you should drink one should also take a few minutes to consider the drawbacks or downside of drinking protein shakes on a regular basis. The drawbacks of protein shakes range from serious health risks to sub-par nutrition intake.

All protein shakes are specifically formulated to be very heavy on protein, without any consideration for the amount of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and carbohydrates that you might need. You should know that even when some commercial protein shake is fortified, it still won't offer you the same kind of nutrition as any whole foods would offer.

According to the Mayo Clinic, whole foods will always offer more benefit than supplement products like as shakes, simply because whole foods contain naturally occurring antioxidants, fiber, phytochemicals and a few other important protective substances that cannot be reproduced.

The well-known registered dietitian and nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky says that replacing meals with some protein shakes may be used successfully in any weight loss strategy, but the use of protein shakes becomes less viable in the long-term. She explains that long-term use of protein shakes may be responsible for nutrient deficiencies because too many meals are replaced with protein shakes.

Although protein shakes will never cause serious health problems in themselves, they could easily be harmful to you if used together with the high protein, low carb diets that are so popular these days. The ‘Centers for Disease Control and Prevention' explain that consistently exceeding your daily protein requirements will lead to weight-gain, elevated risk of heart disease, kidney complications and high blood cholesterol.

In conclusion there are many advantages to drinking protein shakes but it needs to be done sensibly and bearing in mind the ‘Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine' clearly says that taking in double the amount protein you actually need increases your risk of developing osteoporosis, cancer and kidney stones.
